Buemi started to make a name for himself in Formula BMW. Buemi finished third in the standings in his first season in 2004 and bettered that in 2005 with a second-place finish. He moved up to Formula 3 the following season and after coming 12th in 2006 he improved to second the following season. Buemi made his move to Formula 1 in 2008 as a test and reserve driver for Red Bull and earned a fulltime ride with Scuderia Toro Rosso for the 2009 season. In his F1 debut in the 2009 Australian Grand Prix he finished eighth.
