Petrov became the first Russian driver to race in the Formula 1 World Championship after making his debut in 2010. He made his way up through the Russian racing ranks and also raced in the GP2 Series and Euroseries before finding a ride in F1. He joined the Renault team in 2010 and made his debut in the Bahrain Grand Prix. He was challenging for a place in the points when he was forced to retired due to a damaged front suspension strut.
