Kobayashi made his start in Formula 1 when he signed on with Toyota Racing as the team’s third driver following the 2007 season, replacing the departing Franck Montagny. He remained the team’s test and reserve driver throughout the 2008 and 2009 seasons, but did not take part is his first race until late 2009. During that time Timo Glock was unable to race due to injury, so Kobayashi made his debut in the 2009 Brazilian Grand Prix. He finished a respectable ninth.
